SEXUALITY IN THE ELDERLY

The need for love and sexual intimacy does not decrease with age. Nevertheless, with ageing, the body undergoes certain changes that may have some effects on sexual health.

There is a misconception that sex dies a natural death. This is dispelled by a study conducted by the National council of Aging in the United States where it was reported that 71% of men in their 60’s and 57% of men in their 70’s engaged in sexual activity at least once a month.

The expression of sexuality among older adults results in a higher quality of life achieved by fulfilling a natural desire. Sexual orgasm relieves anxiety and contributes to the general well-being of older adults. Sexual relationships can provide love, loyalty, passion, affection, self-esteem, and affirmation of continued functioning, all of which can serve as motivating factors for continued or improved quality of life.
